More than just a pair of days, a weekend is also a state of mind – a feeling of relaxation and freedom to immerse ourselves fully in a favourite activity.  In Weekend Sewing, designer Heather Ross presents creative projects for clothing, accessories, and home items that can be made in a weekend or less.  Some, like the Quick Garden Gloves and Ruby’s Bloomers, take a few hours; others, like the Weekend-Away Travel Bag and Trapeze Sundress, require a day or two – but all of them capture that weekend feeling.

And because weekends are often the most fun when they’re social, Ross features ideas that encourage us to share our stitching and our time, such as a receipe for soup to simmer on the stove while sewing, then serve to guests later in the day, and tips for transporting a sewing machine to a friend’s house for an afternoon or more of social stitching.  Additionally, Ross provides useful information on how to easily design an inspiring weekend sewing space, shop for new or used sewing machines, and the basic sewing skills needed to complete the projects in the book.

The sewing instructions are beautifully illustrated, and patterns are included on pullout sheets at the back of the book.  Each project is photographed in a setting meant to evoke the perfect weekend – from peach-picking in a wraparound skirt, to reading in bed with family in matching pajamas, to setting up a pup tent in the yard – reminding us how good it feels when sewing becomes an integral part of how we live.
